The Glory in the Flower

New Exhibition of floral paintings opening in Linton 22 May 2024

“The earth laughs in flowers”. Ralph Waldo Emerson

For as long as I can remember I have been excited by the vibrancy of the natural world, specifically, her smells, shapes, textures and colours. My father shared his passion for botany and encouraged me to notice and enjoy the wonder of plants.

During my foundation at City Lit I became fascinated with the beauty of decay and Vanitas painters. The acrid smell of mould was ever present in my studio as I painted and photographed bouquets of wilting flowers and fleshy fruit.  I continue to paint flowers from observation, watching their beauty unfold. Tulips, roses and lilies are particular favourites of mine as the structure of their petals continually gains definition and the colours are enriched.  I keep their faded forms in my studio for further study and inspiration.

I feel very fortunate to live in Linton and continue to explore the village and the surrounding countryside, always accompanied by my sketchbook and camera.
